HJN Working Groups

NHLP works with HJN and other key partners to create and maintain working groups on specific issue areas. The following is a brief description of some of the working groups; contact for more information.

Fair Housing (California). Run in coordination with the Western Center on Law & Poverty, this working group discusses and brainstorms fair housing issues among California advocates.

HUD Multifamily Housing. Issues relating to the preservation of the HUD subsidized housing stock, and tenants’ rights in privately-owned HUD- subsidized and assisted housing developments, are on this group's agenda. Both litigation and policy developments are commonly discussed and pursued by group members.

Moving to Work. HUD has allowed a certain number of public housing authorities to operate their local housing program outside the HUD regulatory structure. Led by the Chicago Housing Initiative, this working group focuses on the activities of housing authorities participating in the program and seeks to give advocates assistance in reining in policies that do not serve the interests on low-income public housing residents.

Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers. This group focuses on the public housing and housing choice voucher programs. It addresses issues relating to tenants’ rights, funding levels, voucher portability and source of income discrimination.

Rental Assistance Demonstration. HUD's RAD Demonstration project, launched in 2012, is the focus of this group, which provides information and assistance to advocates working to engage around RAD conversions in their communities.

Reasonable Accommodation (California). This working group discusses and brainstorms issues that advocates across California are seeing with regards to enforcing reasonable accommodation rights for low-income tenants.

Rural Housing. The preservation of the rural rental housing stock has been a main focus of the rural housing working group. It also concerns itself with maintaining and furthering the rights of homeowners participating in the Rural Development single family direct and guaranteed home loan programs.

VAWA. Managed by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, this group seeks to publicize and enforce the housing rights of survivors of domestic violence under the 2005 reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.

Voucher Utilization. This group works to address issues related to housing authority utilization of vouchers. There is also a Bay Area Voucher Utilization Working Group.
